Saturday, June 21 - 4pm
At the Istituto Italiano di Cultura
Organized by the Consulate General of Portugal in Vancouver and EUNIC Canada-Vancouver, with the support of the Camões Institute for Cooperation and Language, the next appointment with the EU Book Club will be with a Portuguese novel: The True Actor (O verdadeiro ator) by Jacinto Lucas Pires.
The True Actor (O verdadeiro ator), written in 2011, garnered its writer the DTS Literary Prize in 2014. An actor, a failure in every facet of his life, is offered a to-die-for role in a big budget American production. As his life starts to unravel, he, and we, are not sure what is real and what is not. The film seems more real to him than what is happening in his life, amid a context of contemporary social and political upheaval. A life lived in an ‘on-screen’ society that has lost its tridimensionality.
Anti-hero, metaphor for present-day Portugal, farce, cinematographical writer, these have been some of the words applied to the novel, the character, the author, and these will be some of the points in our discussion. Come join facilitator Alexandra Henriques to discuss this fascinating novel (presentation and discussion will be conducted in English).
