A l'occasion du Vancouver Writers Fest, venez rencontrer deux écrivains français qui participent au festival!
 

Nos intervenants seront:

CAMILLE BORDAS, écrivaine française

Camille Bordas (née à Lyon en 1987) a grandi entre Paris et Mexico et vit désormais à Chicago. Elle est l'auteure de deux romans en français, Les Treize Desserts (2009) et Partie Commune (2011) tous deux remarqués par la critique. Most Die Young, une courte fiction, est également publiée dans The New Yorker. Son premier roman en anglais, How to Behave in a Crowd, paru en août dernier chez Tim Duggan Books (Crown) a été décrit par George Saunders comme "un livre absolument charmant". Il s'agit d'une histoire sur le passage à l'âge adulte qui décrit brillamment les difficultés de l'adolescence et la prise de conscience que l'âge adulte est tout aussi déroutant.

Contenu de la présentation: Camille évoquera le fait d'écrire en deux langues, tant sous l'angle du bilinguisme que celui des différences culturelles qui existent entre l'approche française de l'écriture littéraire comme un phénomène mystérieux et solitaire, et l'approche américaine, plus orientée vers le "craft", l'idée que l'écriture littéraire peut s'apprendre en classe, à l'université. Camille parlera de sa découverte de cette nouvelle "culture de l'écriture", et de la façon dont elle a influencé sa propre écriture.

SYLVAIN PRUDHOMME, écrivain français

Sylvain Prudhomme a grandi dans différents pays d’Afrique (Cameroun, Burundi, Niger, Ile Maurice). Il s’est ensuite installé à Paris pour étudier la littérature avant de se consacrer pleinement à l’écriture. Il a écrit plusieurs romans, et est l’un des fondateurs de la revue Geste, qui publie des entretiens avec des artistes et des écrivains contemporains. Il a également participé à la création du magazine Le Tigre. Son roman Les Grands est paru en 2014. Il raconte le parcours du Mama Djombo, orchestre mythique qui accompagna les débuts de l’indépendance de la Guinée Bissau à la fin des années 70.

Contenu de la présentation: Sylvain parlera de ce qui fait à ses yeux qu’un livre est « contemporain ». Qu’est-ce qui fait qu’il est d’aujourd’hui, qu’il nous est proche, ami, nécessaire, ici et maintenant ? Il partagera le processus d’écriture de certains de ses livres en racontant comment, s'ils convoquent le passé, c’est toujours pour essayer de mieux comprendre le présent. Sylvain abordera la question du matériau documentaire qui se trouve presque toujours au départ de ses livres, et racontera comment s’opère, peu à peu, le passage au roman, parfois par la fiction.

Meet 2 French authors featured in the Vancouver Writers Festival!

  Our speakers will be:


CAMILLE BORDAS, French writer

Camille Bordas (born in Lyon in 1987) grew up in Paris and Mexico City and now lives in Chicago. Her transitory life is reflected in her sensitive and thoughtful writing. Her previous novels Les Treize Desserts (2009) and Partie Commune (2011) were published in French. Her fiction has also appeared in The New Yorker. Bordas’ first English novel, How to Behave in a Crowd, published last August by Tim Duggan Books (Crown) has been described by George Saunders as “an utterly charming book.” It is an immersive coming of age story that brilliantly captures the difficulties of being a teenager and the realization that adulthood is just as confusing.

Subjects discussed: Camille will talk about writing in two languages, from the angle of bilingualism as well as from the angle of  the cultural differences between the French approach of literary writing as a mysterious and solo phenomenon, and the more "craft-oriented" American approach, the idea that literary writing can be learnt in class. Camille will talk about her discovery of this new "writing culture", and the way it influenced her own writing.

SYLVAIN PRUDHOMME, French writer

Sylvain Prudhomme spent his childhood in Cameroon, Burundi, Niger and Mauritius. He moved to study literature in Paris, but left to become a full-time writer. He has written several novels, and is one of the founders of the Geste magazine, which publishes interviews with contemporary writers and artists. He was also one of the founders of Le Tigremagazine. His French novel, Les Grands (The Greats), has been translated by Jessica Moore to be released this year. It tells the story of a country that falls under a dictatorship that challenges their ideals and hope.

Subjects discussed: Sylvain will talk about what makes a book "contemporary". What makes a book close to us, a friend, necessary, here and now? He will share the writing process of some of his books and tell how, when they evoke the past, it's always an attempt to better understand the present. Sylvain will address the topic of documentary material which is almost always at the beginning of his books and will explain how the transition to the novel, or even the fiction, occurs little by little.
