How to learn French fast

Learning French or any new language can be challenging; however, there are times when we need to speed up the process because we have a trip coming up or because we saw an opportunity where French skills are needed. So, how long does it take to learn French? This question can be hard to answer but, essentially, it depends on various factors like your exposure to other languages, the time and effort you dedicate to studying the language and, how often you practice it.

In this article, we will share with you several techniques that can help you learn French easily and overall, learn French in a fast and efficient way.

Thinks to consider before starting

As per any language, the first part is assessing your level of knowledge with French. To have an idea you can ask yourself questions like do you know any French? When was the last time you practised it? What are the areas that you need to work on?

It can be hard to answer this question if you have already taken some French classes or have had some sort of exposure to the language. Sometimes the best way is to take an assessment test or try an application or a system like Frantastique.

Let's say that you have done your assessment and are now aware of your overall level. There are several ways to improve and gain more French knowledge. Some of the things you can do are:

    • Consider buying or borrowing a French workbook that corresponds to your level and answer some exercises  for at least 5 minutes a day. Like in sports, or any other hobby, practice makes perfect. The more you are exposed to the language, the higher changes that you will evolve faster than people that take a class once a week and do not have more exposure than that.
    • If you have time constraints and can't seem to find the time to fit in extra practice, you can always listen to audiobooks or French language learning podcasts while you do other tasks or chores like driving, cleaning the house, cooking or any other activity that doesn't require your full concentration. Once again, the higher you are exposed to the language, the higher the chances of learning French fast.
    • Use technology at your advantage by using one of the many applications that are meant to be for French learners. You can practice on your phone every day while you commute or are taking a break from the various activities of the day.  As mentioned before, another convenient option is practising online with tools like Frantastique, which sends you a daily email with exercises and audios to practice.
