French books for advanced level learners

If you have taken French classes before or have some level of French, it can sometimes be tricky to find books that are adequate for your level of French, especially for children and teenagers. Usually, French levels are categorized under Common European Framework of Reference, if you have no idea what level you are, you can follow the guidelines in our level chart or even take a placement test. 

In this article, we will be sharing some books recommended for children and teens who have an advanced level of French, commonly known as French level B2. Some of these books can be suitable for children following French immersion programs in British Columbia. We will go through a list of books by age group, and that are also available in our French media library.

Tip Top et les plans secrets

Author: Christine Palluy

This book is adapted to children aged 7 to 10 years old, talks about five children who uncover a mysterious conspiracy in an adventurous story that speaks about emotions and friendship. 

This book is from the series "Les mysteres du Grand hotel" and it contains some complex vocabulary and sentences adapted to advance learners. It is divided by chapters, which makes it easier for reading and comprehension.

Lou Pilouface Passagère clandestine

Author: François Place

A book adapted for pre-teens or children aged 10 to 13 years old. It tells the story of a girl named Lou Pilouface, who becomes a secret passenger on a ship. This book is ideal for children interested in marine life and nautical knowledge.

Enquêtes de Scarlett et Watson (les) : Le Trésor de M.Ziane

Author: Jean-Michel Payet

This is a detective novel suitable for children aged 11 to 14. It is an engaging story that follows two young detectives as they solve a mystery of a  treasure.  It is a book that captivates the interest of children while improving their reading ability and reasoning skills.

Vengeance à La Réunion

Author: Nicolas Gerrier

A book suitable for high school students and above, this book tells the story of Police Chief Philippe Latour who sets out to the island of Reunion to solve the mystery of a criminal who is threatening the habitants of Paris, Nantes, and Bordeaux.  During his query he will find several obstacles that make it difficult to solve the case.

A mystery novel, it is suitable for readers who like mystery novels and suspense stories.

Double assassinat dans la rue Morgue et La lettre volée

Author: Edgar Allan Poe

For high schoolers that like classic detective novels, this book contains two books:  The first book, "Double assasinat dans la rue Morgue", is the story of  a mother and daughter who are brutally murdered in a room with a locked exit,  it seems that the murderer has no way to escape, but the police have never been able to find the murderer.

In the second story "La lettre volée", an important letter is stolen but remains undetected until a private detective arrives at the scene to investigate.

These two novels are considered to be the pioneers of mystery and detective novels, and can be called classics, which have had a profound impact on the development of modern crime fiction. Readers can experience Poe's unique literary style and suspenseful atmosphere in these novels.

L'ancêtre sur son âne

Author:  Andrée Chedid

A coming-of-age novel that tells the story of an Egyptian family that spans generations.

Suitable for adult readers,  Andrée Chédid's story often discusses the fate and fragility of existence .

His book speaks about wealth and how it can happen to those who do not want it, and how death can surprise those who rush to love, those who love each other can desire the opposite ... In the face of the unpredictable and inevitable, gentleness and unity seem to be the only bastions. 

The author invites you to reflect on life, death, and spirituality by exploring the complexity of human beings and the meaning of life.
