La performance | The performance

Dans le cadre de la série Rencontres musicales et littéraires, Lettres du Pacifique, l’Alliance Française de Vancouver et le CCAFCB présentent une soirée placée sous le signe de la poésie et du piano, le 21 mai 2026 à 19h (ouverture des portes à 18h30).

Cinq poètes britanno-colombiens, sélectionnés par un jury, liront leurs poèmes, qui seront chacun suivi d’une improvisation jazz ou classique par Bruno Hubert au piano. 

Un sixième texte sera composé par les spectateurs eux-mêmes, qui le rédigeront pendant qu’un plus long morceau sera joué, en s’inspirant de cette musique et d’une liste de mots qui leur sera fournie. 

Tout le monde se retrouvera autour d’un buffet convivial pour échanger sur l’expérience. Amis de la poésie et de la musique, venez nombreux !

As part of the “Musical and Literary Encounters” series, Lettres du Pacifique, the Alliance Française de Vancouver, and the CCAFCB present an evening dedicated to poetry and piano on May 21, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.).

Five British Columbia poets, selected by a jury, will read their poems, each followed by a jazz or classical improvisation by Bruno Hubert on the piano.

A sixth text will be composed by the audience members themselves, who will write it while a longer piece is played, drawing inspiration from the music and a list of words provided to them Everyone will gather around a convivial buffet to discuss the experience.

Le musicien | The musician

Bruno Hubert est l’un des pianistes de jazz les plus lyriques et expressifs du Canada, connu pour ses harmonies raffinées et un style à la fois original et évocateur des grands maîtres du jazz. Depuis plus de vingt ans, il est une figure discrète mais essentielle de la scène de Vancouver, collaborant avec de nombreux artistes de renom tout en proposant un riche répertoire d’arrangements mêlant jazz, soul, rock et pop.

Bruno Hubert is one of Canada’s most lyrical and expressive jazz pianists, known for his refined harmonies and a style that is both original and evocative of the great masters of jazz. For over twenty years, he has been a discreet yet essential figure on the Vancouver scene, collaborating with numerous renowned artists while offering a rich repertoire of arrangements blending jazz, soul, rock, and pop. 

Les poètes | The poets

Anas Atakora

Anas Atakora, docteur en études françaises et littératures francophones, est l’auteur de huit ouvrages, dont En Chair et en ville (2025) et La Vie que nous menons ici (2023), reconnu sur la scène internationale. Poète et essayiste primé, traduit en plusieurs langues, il enseigne aujourd’hui à l’Université Simon Fraser tout en poursuivant une œuvre engagée en poésie et en non-fiction.

Anas Atakora, who holds a Ph.D. in French Studies and Francophone Literature, is the author of eight books, including En Chair et en ville (2025) and La Vie que nous menons ici (2023), which has garnered international recognition. An award-winning poet and essayist whose work has been translated into several languages, he currently teaches at Simon Fraser University while continuing to produce socially engaged poetry and nonfiction.

Ying Chen

Ying Chen, écrivaine sino-québécoise établie en Colombie-Britannique, a publié une douzaine de romans et deux essais en France et au Québec. Son œuvre explore la nostalgie, la mémoire et le déracinement, avec des titres notables tels que L’ingratitude (lauréat du prix Québec-Paris), Les lettres chinoises et La poétesse. Elle écrit en français depuis son arrivée au Canada.

Ying Chen, a Chinese-Quebecois writer based in British Columbia, has published a dozen novels and two essays in France and Quebec. Her work explores nostalgia, memory, and uprooting, with notable titles such as L’ingratitude (winner of the Québec-Paris Prize), Les lettres chinoises, and La poétesse. She has been writing in French since her arrival in Canada.

Patrick Lac

Poète et auteur-compositeur francophone, Patrick Lac est originaire d’Ottawa, établi à Nelson. Son style est à la fois brut et contemplatif. Il explore les tensions entre dérive et enracinement, mémoire et effacement. Lauréat de plusieurs distinctions, sa pratique artistique entre poésie, chanson et slam, le mène à travailler à son premier album en français sous le nom d’Opal.

A French-speaking poet and singer-songwriter, Patrick Lac is originally from Ottawa and now lives in Nelson. His style is both raw and contemplative. He explores the tensions between drifting and putting down roots, memory and forgetting. The recipient of several awards, his artistic practice—which spans poetry, songwriting, and slam—has led him to work on his first French-language album under the name Opal.

Gynette Mercier

La poésie constitue pour Gynette Mercier un espace vivant de réflexion et de transmission, qu’elle explore à travers une pratique multidisciplinaire mêlant voix, image, écriture et performance. Active sur la scène francophone de Vancouver, elle développe une démarche engagée entre création audiovisuelle, radio et documentaire, nourrie par une ouverture à l’international

For Gynette Mercier, poetry is a vibrant space for reflection and expression, which she explores through a multidisciplinary practice that blends voice, image, writing, and performance. Active in Vancouver’s Francophone arts scene, she has developed an approach that bridges audiovisual creation, radio, and documentary, informed by an international perspective.

Michèle Smolkin

Installée à Vancouver depuis 1983, Michèle Smolkin a un parcours multidisciplinaire : architecte, réalisatrice, autrice, artiste visuelle. Son œuvre littéraire, variée dans les formes (romans, jeunesse, théâtre, poésie) a été publiée au Québec et ici, et a reçu divers prix. Elle y explore la mémoire, l’inclusion et les discriminations.

Michèle Smolkin Based in Vancouver since 1983, Michèle Smolkin has a multidisciplinary background: architect, filmmaker, author, and visual artist. Her literary work, which takes many forms (novels, children’s books, plays, poetry), has been published in Quebec and here, and has received various awards. In it, she explores memory, inclusion, and discrimination.
