Alliance Française Vancouver vibrates to the rhythm of the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival.

Flamenco Guitar Concert brings together two of Canada's leading flamenco guitarists for an evening dedicated to the richness and diversity of flamenco guitar.

Jean
et la guitariste de Victoria Iminah Kani présenteront
chacun une performance solo, mettant en valeur leurs voix artistiques individuelles et des années de dévouement à la tradition flamenco.
Les deux artistes ont poursuivi des études avancées en Espagne et sont devenus des interprètes actifs au sein de la communauté flamenco du
Canada, tout en développant leurs propres approches musicales uniques.
Montreal-based guitarist Philippe Jean and Victoria-based guitarist Iminah Kani will each present a solo
performance, showcasing their individual artistic voices and years of dedication to the flamenco tradition. Both artists
have pursued advanced studies in Spain and have become active performers within Canada's flamenco community, while developing
their own unique musical approaches.

Victor Kolstee
sera également présenté. Créé à la mémoire de Victor Kolstee, le prix soutient le développement des
guitaristes de flamenco émergents au Canada en les aidant à poursuivre des études avancées en Espagne. Le récipiendaire de cette année est
Philippe Jean, tandis qu’Iminah Kani en a été la première bénéficiaire en 2024. Le prix reflète la passion de toute une vie de Victor pour
la guitare flamenco et sa conviction dans le soutien des futures générations d’artistes.
During the evening, the Victor Kolstee Award will also be presented. Created in memory of Victor Kolstee,
the award supports the development of emerging flamenco guitarists in Canada by helping them pursue advanced studies in Spain.
This year's recipient is Philippe Jean, while Iminah Kani was the inaugural recipient in 2024. The award reflects
Victor's lifelong passion for flamenco guitar and his belief in supporting future generations of artists.

En 2018, Iminah Kani a commencé à étudier l’art de la guitare flamenca avec le guitariste flamenco Gareth Owen. Depuis lors, elle s’est produite aux Victoria Flamenco Festivals en 2019, 2021, 2023 et 2025 ainsi qu’au Vancouver International Flamenco Festival en 2021, 2024 et 2025. Iminah Kani a reçu deux bourses de la Société du Flamenco de la Isla et a été présentée dans un article par The Georgia Straight News pour ses réalisations en flamenco. En 2024, Iminah Kani a reçu le premier Prix Victor Kolstee, qui lui a permis d’étudier le flamenco à la célèbre Fundación Cristina Heeren à Séville, en Espagne. En 2025, elle a reçu une Media-Beca (demi-bourse) de la Fundación Cristina Heeren. En juin 2026, Iminah Kani a terminé ses études à Séville à la Fundación Cristina Heeren et est retournée à Victoria, BC où elle réside actuellement.
2018, Iminah Kani began studying the art of flamenco guitar with local phenom flamenco guitarist Gareth Owen. Since then, she’s gone on to perform at the 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025 Victoria Flamenco Festivals as well as the 2021, 2024 and 2025 Vancouver International Flamenco Festival. Iminah Kani has received two scholarships from the Flamenco de la Isla Society and has been featured in an article by The Georgia Straight News for her flamenco achievements. In 2024, Iminah Kani received the inaugural Victor Kolstee Award, which allowed her to study flamenco at the renowned Fundación Cristina Heeren in Sevilla, Spain. In 2025 she was awarded a Media-Beca (half scholarship) from the Fundación Cristina Heeren. In June 2026, Iminah Kani finished studying in Sevilla at the Fundación Cristina Heeren and has returned to Victoria, BC where she currently resides.
Philippe Jean est un guitariste de flamenco, ostéopathe et éducateur basé à Montréal. Formé à la guitare classique et flamenco, il a beaucoup étudié en Espagne et a été actif dans la communauté flamenco canadienne pendant plus d’une décennie. Il se produit comme soliste et accompagnant des danseurs et des chanteurs. Son travail artistique se concentre sur la tradition du flamenco tout en explorant les possibilités expressives de ses formes moins connues, en particulier le fandango et ses dérivés.
Philippe Jean is a Montreal-based flamenco guitarist, osteopath, and educator. Trained in both classical and flamenco guitar, he has studied extensively in Spain and has been active in the Canadian flamenco community for over a decade, performing as a soloist and accompanying dancers and singers. His artistic work focuses on the tradition of flamenco while exploring the expressive possibilities of its lesser-known forms, particularly the fandango and its derivatives.
Cette année, le Vancouver International Flamenco Festival prendra place du 19 au 27 septembre. Depuis 35 ans, le Festival est au cœur de la scène florissante du flamenco de la ville, encourage l’innovation et l’expérimentation, tout en restant profondément enraciné dans les traditions de l’esthétique flamenco.
This year, the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival will take place from September 19 to 27. For 35 years, the Festival has been at the heart of the city’s flourishing flamenco scene, encouraging innovation and experimentation, while remaining deeply rooted in the traditions of the beloved aesthetic.
