In collaboration with the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival and the Consulate General of France in Vancouver, Alliance Française Vancouver was thrilled to bring the inaugural edition of BD à BC: French Comics Come West this October 12-17, 2021!

Focused entirely on French comics creators from both Canada and Europe, BD à BC brought a wide variety of online programming to our attendees—from live and pre-recorded workshops and interviews, podcasts, written interviews and more, BD à BC has something for everyone!

NATHALIE FERLUT and TAMIA BAUDOUIN, the creators of ARTEMISIA (out now from Beehive Books!) join us in a special pre-recorded talk! Nathalie and Tamia discuss the book’s historical roots, their collaboration and much more in this extensive discussion!
Presented in French with English subtitles!

“This full-color graphic novel recounts the remarkable story of Artemisia, whose life story is told through the lens of Artemisia’s daughter as she questions her mother about their family history. The ensuing tale spans most of Gentileschi’s life, beginning with her childhood in Rome in her father’s painting studio, to the sexual abuse she experienced at the hands of a tutor and the arduous trial that followed, as well as the highlights of her prolific career in which she received commissions from clients as powerful as the Medici and the English royal family and became the first woman admitted to the prestigious Academy of Arts in Florence.”

LIVE EVENT! Making Stamps with GINETTE LAPALME & Toutoune Gallery

Artist GINETTE LAPALME welcomes you virtually to her recently launched Toutoune Gallery in Toronto to teach you all she knows about stamp making…and she knows a lot! Ginette will walk you through some tips, show off some of her collection and show you around the gallery live in Zoom!

About Ginette Lapalme: GINETTE LAPALME (b.1987) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Toronto. Since graduating from OCAD with a Bachelor of Design in 2009, Ginette has been a prominent presence in the Toronto small press and comic scene, most notably as the co-curator of the Woweezonk Small Press space at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival with Patrick Kyle and Chris Kuzma from 2009-2019.

MAN IN FURS: A conversation with creators CATHERINE SAUVAT & ANNE SIMON

In this pre-recorded conversation writer CATHERINE SAUVAT and artist ANNE SIMON join us to discuss the creation of their new book MAN IN FURS, available this November from Fantagraphics! Radio-Canada host/journalist MARC FOURNIER leads the conversation as we talk about their journey into the story of  Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (author of Venus in Furs) and how the book came to be!

LIVE EVENT: BRIGITTE ARCHAMBAULT "THE SHIATSUNG PROJECT"

In our second live event of the day artist BRIGITTE ARCHAMBAULT joins us to talk about her book THE SHIATSUNG PROJECT coming in November from Conundrum Press! Brigitte will be in conversation with MARC FOURNIER as they discuss that book and more live!
This panel will be presented live in French, with a subtitled version coming at a later date to VanCAF Youtube page!

About Brigitte Archambault: Brigitte Archambault, born in 1973, lives in Montreal. After graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from Concordia University, her career debuted with solo and group painting and sculpture exhibitions in galleries in Quebec. Concurrent with this, she worked on animated film projects, including her own short films which have been screened at festivals worldwide. More recently, she has found the time to realize a dream: that of creating her first graphic novel.

The inaugural BD À BC festival draws to a close with our closing panel with our amazing poster artists! (You gotta schedule on your toes when accounting for time zone differences!) MADELINE BERGER and PIERRE MAUREL join Festival Director Jarrett Evan Samson bright and early (for a Sunday) to discuss their collaborative work on the Festival’s poster as well as their own comics and careers! A panel to truly bring home our festival’s spirit of bringing french comics west!
