The Arnarchists: Sunday, September 27 & Saturday, October 3
One of North America’s largest film festivals, the Vancouver International Film Festival will once again welcome some of the world's finest films to one of the most beautiful cities on the planet.
Building on an impressive 2014 edition in which 349 films drew more than 144,000 attendees, VIFF delivers the world’s most spectacular cinema to nine Vancouver screens. Entering its 34th year, VIFF has seen impressive growth year over year, cementing its place as one of the top international film festivals in North America.
VIFF always shows films from Italy, Iran and South Africa, but this year we'd like to bring special attention to the exceptional work these countries are now producing. Here they join the ongoing Spotlight on France.
France, the birthplace of cinema, has a long and justly celebrated filmmaking tradition, rich in innovation and intelligence. VIFF's 2015 Spotlight on France once again celebrates that tradition with a wide-ranging selection of fiction and documentary features that showcases the vibrancy of "La France" and its filmmakers. From thrillers (Disorder) and period pieces (The Anarchists) to politically astute documentaries (Banking Nature) and ethnographic fiction (The Mask from San), our selection contains something that will cater to the tastes of every cinephile.

"THE ANARCHISTS"
Two of France’s greatest young stars—Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) and Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is the Warmest Colour)—are at the centre of Elie Wajeman’s exhilarating drama about a sensitive, politically dispassionate cop named Jean (Rahim) in Belle Époque Paris tasked with insinuating himself into an anarchist’s cell. Posing as a factory worker, Jean makes contact with Elisée’s (Swann Arlaud) group of idealists, whose idealism goes out the window when they decide to start burgling the homes of the bourgeoisie. But it is Elisée’s girlfriend, Judith (Exarchopoulos), who soon becomes the focus of Jean’s attention, even as he continues to report back to headquarters. As his attraction to Judith—reciprocated—grows, Jean’s loyalties begin to waver…
Other than the two leads, both excellent, the stars of the film are cinematographer David Chizallet, production designer Denis Hager and costumer Anaïs Romand. Together they conjure a vision of Bohemian Paris that is at once stylized, beguilingly beautiful and thematically rich.
