Online or in-person, our popular Adult French classes for beginners will allow you to develop efficiently all five skills: speaking, interacting, listening, reading and writing; and provides you with a wealth of intercultural insight. French A1.1 curriculum & Prerequisites


In our French for beginner class, A1 Part 1 - Discovery, you will quickly learn the following objectives in just a few classes! (curriculum based on twice-a-week classes)

  • Learn basic French quickly;
  • Discover the French language;
  • Communicate in French in the classroom with the teacher and other students;
  • Greet someone;
  • Give and ask for personal information (name, surname, address, phone #);
  • Present or identify;
  • Name and locate countries, cities, landmarks;
  • Indicate a mean of transport;
  • Spell;
  • Count.


There is no prerequisite to enrol in this level: no prior knowledge of French whatsoever!

Alliance Française uses a modern textbook for its beginner classes: Cosmopolite 1 from Hachette,  a modern action-based method with exciting new topics and up-to-date documents.

A1 Part 1 - Discovery

A1 Part 1 - Discovery

Two classes of 2 hours a week

Are you a complete beginner? This level is for you!
(for once-a-week classes, Part A is a prerequisite for Part B).

In this class, students will learn the basics in French:

  • Discover the French language;
  • Spell;
  • Count;
  • Communicate in French in the classroom with the teacher and other students;
  • Greet;
  • Give and ask for personal information (name, address, phone #);
  • Present or identify;
  • Name and locate countries, cities, landmarks;
  • Indicate a mean of transport.


Prerequisite: no prior knowledge of French whatsoever (for once-a-week classes, Part 1A is a prerequisite for Part 1B).

Textbooks: Cosmopolite 1, Unit 0, unit 1 + lesson 1, 2, 3 of Unit 2, and AFV Self-Study Guide for beginners.
NEW STUDENTS: For online classes: books to be picked up in our premises (no delivery). For in-person classes: the teacher will give the books on the first day of class.
Please note the curriculum displayed is based on a full level of twice-a-week classes. For once-a-week classes, students will need Part A and Part B to complete the level.

One class of 2 hours a week

In this class, students will learn the basics in French:

From only $15.6/hour. All prices are subject to change without notice. Books and registration fees are not included in the tuition fee. To cover one book, you will need to take 5 sessions of classes twice a week (or equivalent).
