MEET WITH Brigitte Findakly, Lewis Trondheim and Yvan Alagbé

Meet  3 famous French comics authors during a special evening at the VPL. They will introduce you to their world and present their different works. The presentation will be in French.

Brigitte Findakly was born in Mosul, Iraq, to an Iraqi father and a French mother, and lived there until 1973. She has been a colorist for comics, graphic novels, and comics magazines since 1982, collaborating with such publications as Pif Gadget, Le Journal de Mickey, and Spirou. Born in 1964 in Fontainebleau, Lewis Trondheim had a dull childhood and an uneventful adolescence. Around the age of 25, armed with a photocopier, he single-handedly published a fanzine, which lasted for 12 issues. On discovering that minimalist art has its limits, he decided to learn how to draw. And he came up with "Lapinot et les carottes de Patagonie" (L’Association et le lézard, 1992, 2nd ed. L’Association, 1995). Find out more about his work, here. 

Yvan Alagbé was born in Paris and spent three years of his youth in West Africa. He returned to study mathematics and physics at the Université de Paris-Sud, where he met Olivier Marboeuf. Alagbé and Marboeuf founded a contemporary visual arts review called L’oeil carnivore and the magazine Le Chéval sans tête (“The Headless Horse”), which gained a cult following for its publication of innovative graphic art and comics. À l'occasion du Vancouver Comic Arts festival, vous pourrez rencontrer trois auteurs talentueux, Brigitte Findakly, Lewis Trondheim and Yvan Alagbé.  

Brigitte Findakly est née à Mossoul en Irak d’un père irakien et d’une mère française, elle y ets restée jusqu’en 1973. Vers l'âge de 25 ans, armé d'une photocopieuse, il publia à lui seul un fanzine, qui dura 12 numéros. En découvrant que l'art minimaliste a ses limites, il décide d'apprendre à dessiner. Yvan Alagbé est né à Paris et a passé trois ans de sa jeunesse en Afrique de l’Ouest. Il retourne en France afin d’étudier les mathématiques et la physique à l’Université Paris-Sud, où il rencontre Olivier Marboeuf. Alagbé et Marboeuf fondent une revue d’arts visuels contemporains appelée L’œil carnivore, ainsi que le magazine Le cheval sans tête, devenue culte à la suite de ses publications d’arts graphiques et de bandes-dessinées innovatrices.
