Marie-Claire Howard, President

An active member of Alliance Française Vancouver since 1996, Marie-Claire is a former journalist and Public Relations Consultant now devoting her time to philanthropy and sports.  She is serving her fourth mandate and has been involved with the New Alliance project from the beginning.  She has sat on the Board of Directors of the Vancouver Hawks Field Hockey Club, the Advisory Board of the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association, the Lord Tennyson PAC and the French Chamber of Commerce in Toronto and Vancouver.  She is also on the Financial Committee and the Opportunities Committee of Social Venture Partners. 

 

Robert Khouri, Vice-President

Robert joined the AFV board in 2016. He sits on the construction and the financial planning committees. Robert has a mathematic and engineering academic background (P Eng ETP - Paris & MSc Columbia University - New York). As an entrepreneur, he founded and ran 2 successful companies. He sold the first one in Europe before moving to Vancouver in 2004 where he works as the CEO of his second SaaS.

 

Suzanne (Suzy) Buckley - Treasurer

Suzy Buckley joined the AFV Board in 2018 and is currently Treasurer and sits on the Financial Planning Committee.  She has been an economic consultant for over 20 years, specializing in litigation matters primarily involving intellectual property disputes. Suzy was a member of the board of directors of Canada India Village Aid (CIVA) from 2007 to 2016, and has been very active in her children’s school Parent Advisory Council (PAC) for many years, including 3 years as chair of their elementary school PAC, and currently chair of their high school PAC.


Bruno Gervès, Past President

Born, educated and worked in France. Moved in Vancouver in 2005 with my family to start over. Joined Alliance Française in 2012 to have access to the library. Joined a marketing Committee 1 year later and was elected to the Board of Director the following year (2014). 2015, 2016, 2017 was elected Chair of the Board of Director. A telecommunication engineer by training, after a few working years in the field of distance learning, re-oriented my career to the world of education (more human contact, management, transmission knowledge, …) and was director of a vocational training center (4000 students, 250 teachers , …) before we decided to move to Vancouver, BC. Since in Canada, working in one of my passion: the wine industry as director of liquor stores and since now 7 years owner of a consultant/wine equipment supply firm with a large territory (SK+AB+BC+YT+Alaska).


Jacques Becker, Director

Back to the Board of Directors of Alliance Française since June 2018, Jacques has been President of the Board of the Association for 2 periods of respectively 3 years and 4 years, in the years 2000 to 2007. At the same period of time Jacques used to be as well President of the Board of the French Chamber of Commerce in Vancouver for 4 years. Since 2008 Jacques is the Honorary Consul of Monaco for BC and AB. Prior to his move to Vancouver in 1998 Jacques used to be in France GM of the family company building tennis courts and sport fields all over France. He sold the company then moved to his wife’s company, MJ Godard, which was developing a new concept, at the time, of cosmetic stores. In charge of the development he built more than 60 stores in 5 years in France.


Sima Godfrey, Director

Sima is Associate Professor of French at UBC where she has been teaching since 1989.  She is a specialist in 19th-century French literature and cultural history. From 1998 – 2006 she established and directed the Institute for European Studies at UBC, where she worked closely with the European consulates in Vancouver and especially with their cultural services. She was on the board of the Vancouver International Song Institute for 4 years where she became co-director from 2013-2015. At UBC she is also an associate of the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies which works closely with the French Consulate to bring in French scholars.


Frédérique Morel, Director

Frédérique joined the Board of Director of L’Alliance Française de Vancouver in 2016. A born world traveller, Frederique has built software businesses in 3 countries and has been an Internet Entrepreneur since 2003. In 2016 she combined her passion for meditation with her passion for entrepreneurship and founded Senzea, a wellness brand in Vancouver. Active in the wellness community, she is also a board member of the WestCoast Reiki Centre. Frédérique is an adventurer, so when she’s not working you can find her off-roading to find a great spot for wilderness camping, a new hike, road tripping or enjoying the culture of a new country.


Emmanuelle Roux, Director

Emmanuelle joined the board of the Alliance Française in June 2015.  A dynamic and versatile Marketing Professional with over 15 years of experience in developing and managing different levels of marketing programs for the architectural and design industry, she is currently the Marketing and Communications Manager for ACCIONA Infrastructure Canada Inc., a heavy civil engineering company that delivers solutions that contribute to the economic and social progress of the communities in which it operates.  A Canadian and French Citizen, fluent in three languages, she has been living in BC for over 20 years.  While her son was at La Rose-des-Vents school, she was actively involved with various committees and fundraising activities.


Benoit Sorel,Acting Director

Benoit Sorel joined the AFV Board in 2018 as acting director and currently sits on the Finance and Construction committees. Over the last 20 years, Benoit has been working as a consultant in the Banking, Mining, Construction and Infrastructure industries. His expertise is Finance, Strategic Risk Management, Project Risk Management and Prime Contract Management. His last role was CEO of a PPP transit project in Vancouver.
