SATURDAY, APRIL 29 – European Book Club 4pm at Istituto Italiano di Cultura
The next meeting of the EU Book Club will discuss an Italian book: Clash of Civilizations over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio (Scontro di civilta’ per un ascensore a Piazza Vittorio)*, a witty novel on the theme of multiculturalism written by Algerian-born, Rome-based author Amara Lakhous.
The novel will be presented by Mena Martini, who will also lead the discussion, at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

LUNDI 30 AVRIL A 19H00 – "David Servan-Schreiber’s Life & Legacy" par son frère, Franklin Servan-Schreiber
Le 24 juillet dernier, le médecin et chercheur en neurosciences David Servan-Schreiber s’est éteint. Il laisse derrière lui le bestseller On peut se dire au revoir plusieurs fois, qui décrit son long combat contre le cancer. Son frère, Franklin Servan-Schreiber présentera son livre, récemment traduit en anglais, et nous parlera de son rôle dans cette bataille. La conférence sera tenue en anglais

Doctor and neuroscientist, David Servan-Schreiber, died peacefully last July. His novel, Not The Last Goodbye, stays behind him, and describes his long battle against cancer. His brother, Franklin, will be presenting his book, recently translated in English, and will share the lessons he learned from being a care giver to his brother. The lecture will be in English.

Déjà amateur de portraits, la découverte de nouvelles cultures et paysages lui ont donné l’inspiration nécessaire pour se lancer plus sérieusement dans la réalisation de portraits qui lui permettent de faire passer les « Emotions behind colors ». Il exposera ses tableaux du 19 avril au 20 mai.

Jean-Louis Thiébault, ancien directeur de l'Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Lille, est actuellement professeur invité au département de science politique de l’Université Simon Fraser. Il sera notre invité pour une conférence sur l’élection présidentielle française. Il nous aidera à mieux saisir les enjeux et les tenants de celle-ci en nous faisant partager ses connaissances sur le sujet. La conférence sera présentée en français.

The book which is suggested for discussion by the Goethe Institut is the German thriller Crime by Ferdinand von Schirach. This lawyer uses short stories to tell us about all the criminal cases he had to face during his career. Each story touches on a different social class and can be tragic, frightening or even distressing. The book was as acclaimed as much as it was criticized and its lengthy stay on top of the German best-seller list is well-deserved.
